MUSINGS OF THE ARTISTS

QUESTIONS OF PERCEPTION

Why, when we perceive life in moments, not instants, has the instant become the standard approach to representation of our world in painting?

Does the rule "shut one eye and squint" (traditional-painting observational technique) apply to painting the genuine experience of human observation?

What does a memory look like?  Does it have a clear light source?  Does it have anatomy?  Does it have fully resolved draftsmanship?  How big is it... 16" x 20"?  8" x 10"?  The size of a wall?

Does your perception look like my perception?  Does your memory look like my memory?

What is the shortest moment we can perceive?  Can you perceive the moment my fingers snap, or only the snap and the ringing echo together?  The sound of a snap is the silence before and after, yes?  Imagine the sound without a beginning or an end... is it still a snap?
How can we paint what we can't perceive?  Why would we try, anyway?

Motion cannot exist without time.  Does time exist without motion?  How do you create time (and motion) in a still painting?

Quotes

“Snorkeling the British Virgin Islands brought me to the conclusion that I must go deeper.  Not only in my painting, but in my diving and in my commitment to protect the ocean that I love.  Diving was like seeing everything anew. Colors, rhythms, light, magic.  Stillness, yet energy. Fleeting grunts, and stoic sharks. Flow and calm. “

"For me there is no more beautiful place, no greater visual stimulation, than a healthy coral reef.  There is also no greater challenge for me as an artist, nor is there any greater issue facing us as a species than how we will preserve our oceans for future generations. No subject is off the table of course, but sometimes it almost seems silly to paint anything else."
